How to convert a PST file to PDF

Choose the .pst file above. We open the Outlook folders, count the e-mails and show you the oldest 20 as PDF, free. If they look right, pay once and download one ZIP: a PDF for every e-mail, one PDF per year, the attachments and an index that says which folder (Inbox, Sent Items, your own folders) each e-mail came from.

Where to find the .pst file

Classic Outlook for Windows: File > Open & Export > Import/Export > Export to a file > Outlook Data File (.pst). Old archives are often already .pst files in Documents > Outlook Files. The new Outlook and Outlook on the web cannot export a .pst; for Microsoft 365 accounts an administrator can export one with eDiscovery.

Why PDF instead of a .pst

A .pst opens only in classic Outlook for Windows. A PDF opens on every computer and phone, prints the way it looks and cannot be changed by accident, which is why lawyers, auditors and HR ask for e-mails as PDF. Desktop tools for this cost $29 to $49; FileOpens works in any browser, also on a Mac.

Questions about mailbox to PDF

Are contacts and calendar included?

No, only e-mails with their attachments. Contacts, calendar items and tasks are left out.

Is a password-protected .pst a problem?

Usually not: the Outlook password does not encrypt the e-mails themselves, so we can still read them.

How much does it cost?

Checking the mailbox and the PDF of the first 20 e-mails are free. The full archive is a one-time $14.99 for up to 1,000 e-mails, or $39.00 for up to 20,000. Larger mailboxes: write to support@fileopens.com.

How big can the mailbox be?

Up to 2 GB for an .mbox and 4 GB for an Outlook .pst. It uploads in parts, so a slow or patchy connection is fine; keep the page open until the upload finishes.

How long does it take?

Counting the e-mails and the free preview take a few minutes. The full archive takes about a minute per few hundred e-mails; you can close the page and come back to the same link.

What is in the ZIP?

A PDF for every e-mail, numbered from the oldest, one PDF per year with all of its e-mails, the attachments in a folder next to each e-mail, and an index (Index.csv for Excel and Index.html) with date, sender, recipients and subject.

Is my mail safe?

The mailbox is used only to make your archive. Nothing in it runs, nothing is loaded from the internet, and everything is deleted automatically 24 hours after the archive is ready. Nobody reads it.

I have Apple Mail or Thunderbird, not Gmail

Apple Mail: Mailbox > Export Mailbox gives a folder ending in .mbox; upload the file called "mbox" inside it. Thunderbird: the ImportExportTools NG add-on exports a folder as .mbox, or upload the mail file from your profile folder (for example "Inbox", with no extension).

Do you convert Outlook .pst files?

Yes. Upload the .pst on PST to PDF; the index shows which Outlook folder each e-mail came from. An .ost file (Outlook's offline copy) cannot be read on its own: export a .pst from Outlook first. A single message (.msg) is free: MSG to PDF.
